Beautiful Smog

LA smog...it's kind of beautiful in a weird, toxic kind of way.

Chinatown is LA

The Chinatown we know now, is not the original Chinatown in Los Angeles. There were several others AND there was a Chinatown Land ("theme park" for white people with orientalized motifs).

Common Ground, Sept. 2

Went down to the OC to catch Common Ground. It's a neat space for community members to express themselves through all different mediums, including spoken word, song, story, and art. This was only their second session ever, and they were already pulling in over 100 people.

I think what I appreciate the most is how genuine the community members were. You didn't have folks going up who were super polished. That's not what this is about. This is about sharing your voice, not a performance. I feel, especially with spoken word, there's now more of a standard on how well you perform. While I believe there should be room for that, my love will still be for folks who speak, unchoreographed, from the heart.

I GOT MY MASTERS

I received a phone call today, after nearly a month of waiting for results and heard the good news. All that reading, studying, and cramming paid off...I now have a Masters in Public Administration!

What does this mean for me? Hmm, well..I've already been applying what I've learned in class towards what I do at work... So I guess when it comes down to it, all it has done is buy me more "legitimacy" among some crowds, and I can put MPA after my name on my business cards (which I'm kind of debating on).

:)
